Moral Reconation Therapy – Babylon

Moral reconation therapy (MRT) is cognitive behavioral therapy used to reinforce abstinence and as relapse prevention. Moral reconation therapy occurs in group counseling sessions and in addiction counseling centers. People in treatment meet as a group, or for individual sessions weekly (sometimes twice weekly), for a period of three to six months. Positive moral reasoning is stressed and developed in these sessions.

Treatment can vary based on the individual needs of each addicted patient. To find out more, contact Alcohol Treatment Centers Babylon at (516) 283-5664.

The Methods of MRT

Using cognitive-behavioral therapy, moral reconation therapy is a mix of components from other forms of psychological therapy. The goals are to cultivate positive growth on three levels: social, moral, and behavioral. Skills training is given with specific exercises and assignments which are reviewed in the sessions. Sixteen objectively defined steps focus on seven basic treatment issues:

  • Confronting current beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that helped lead to destructive behaviors
  • Assessing current relationships and their ramifications
  • Reinforcing positive behavior and habits for continued desirable behavior
  • Forming a positive identity as a gateway to change
  • Enhancing self-concept for boosting self-esteem
  • Decreasing pleasure seeking and developing a frustration tolerance
  • Developing higher moral reasoning to bring about changes in decision making

How Does Moral Reconation Work?

MRT suggests that low levels of moral reasoning are faulty when used to make decisions between right and wrong. No amount of therapy, job skills training or punishment in addiction counseling will impact this. If moral reasoning is not addressed, bad decisions will continue.

With MRT, people with low levels of moral reasoning must face consequences of their behavior and the results it has on their loved ones as well at the community. Low levels of moral reasoning are commonly found in people with addictions. This leads to beliefs that justify bad behavior and the long-term continuation of destructive living without recognizing the significance and connection of the resulting negative consequences.

MRT examines these beliefs and low levels of reasoning. An outlined approach is used as counseling treatment so these individuals change how they reason. The results then would be positive judgments by having a higher level of understanding of what is right and wrong.

Recognizing the connections between low levels of moral reasoning and negative consequences is key. Moral doesn’t have any spiritual or religious elements. Rather, it is a concept that moral reasoning is how a person decides what actions to take in a situation.

Treatment addiction centers use MRT as an addiction moral therapy tool for modifying how an addict reasons and comes to decisions in situations. The most important scenario is when they are thinking about whether or not to abuse substances.

The change is for the addict to now recognize choosing to use is wrong because of the negative consequences it will create for themselves, their loved ones and the community. This reasoning will hopefully result in continued sobriety. The addict will go forward with improved coping skills to utilize as recovery tools to stay sober and this will prevent relapse.
